Writing on Medium Isn’t What I Thought It Was

I think it’s about time I said it.

Last night, I was thinking about my initial blogging days. They used to be exciting. I had no idea what I was doing. Neither did I know what outcome my articles would bring.

Getting ten or twenty views on my blog posts seemed like success because nobody really cared. And when someone wrote back to me about my article, it felt like I had succeeded.

I discovered Medium a year after starting my blog. Writing on this platform felt different initially, but I made Medium my primary place to write once I got the hang of it.

The numbers—followers, likes, comments, and earnings—felt awesome. Nothing made me happier than sharing my stories here and reading positive comments. There were the negatives, too, but I ignored them and focused on the good.

I continued writing on Medium for three years. During my time here, I experienced both the good and the bad. I experienced the highs—viral articles, $1000s in earnings, and the growth of my audience. Then came the lows—algorithm change, quality degradation, lack of transparency, etc.

I didn’t complain and kept writing. But things didn’t get any better. Instead, they got worse.
