Be Stoic: Feeling Emotions Doesn’t Mean Expressing Them
The path to a better you.
I’ve been struggling with over-expressing my emotions lately. Whenever I’m at a party or an event, I respond quickly. My reactions are usually out of my control.
I’ve always been told I smile a lot, which I thought was good. But I’ve slowly realized that smiling too much can signify over-expressing your emotions. In some cultures, it can also represent weakness.
After learning it the hard way recently, I decided to express less.
I’ve been smiling less, thinking more intensely, and trying to be more self-aware.
Not expressing emotions doesn’t mean you have to be mean or insensitive. Instead, you stop being so agreeable to everyone around you.
Be calm
You don’t need to express any emotion too quickly. Instead, you must think calmly for a few seconds before you respond.
Chill out. Let your facial expression be mysterious so the other person doesn’t know what’s inside your head.
Again, it doesn’t mean you show no emotion at all. You don’t need to keep all of your feelings inside. This might cause more mental problems like depression and overthinking.
